Install a cat door - What does it cost?
The cost of installing a cat door depends on various factors:
Place of installation
Window, door, wall
Characteristics of the surface
Wall thickness, door type, window glazing, etc.
Cat door type
Chip function, standard, magnetic etc.
Installation in a door – Often the cheapest option
Installation in a wooden door is often the cheapest option. In addition to the costs for the cat door itself, there are only a few more costs for the carpentry work of sawing the hole in the door. These are made up of the work cost including : travel, tools, and small items as well as the actual working hours. The price range is between 300 CHF and 500 CHF.
When installing a cat door in a metal door, fire door or other special doors, sawing the hole is more complex. As a result, the costs are correspondingly higher. The installation in a door made of glass is the most complex. This is because with a professional installation in glass, a hole cannot simply be sawed, but the entire glass has to be replaced. The prices are based on the cost of installing a cat door in a window. More detailed information is in the following section.
Good to know
As a tenant, you are often obliged to hand over the window without a cat door when you move out. A professional craftsman will therefore not damage the glass during removal and will hand the glass over to you for storage in your cellar or another safe place. The expensive costs of replacing and installing the glass are then eliminated.
Installation in windows – popular but relatively expensive
Installation in windows is probably the most common, but at the same time, it is often the most expensive option. This is because a hole cannot simply be cut in the glass, but the entire glass has to be replaced. Otherwise, there is a risk that the glass will shatter. Be it during installation or during use. Therefore, as always with building: Cheaper is seldom cheaper. The size of the window glass, the frame of the window, the location of the hole cutout, and the quality of the window have an influence on the price. Most expensive is the installation in a large balcony door with burglar-proof multiple glazing. Not only is the material used here much more expensive, but assembly and disassembly often require several craftsmen due to the weight. The best option is to install it in a rather small window with single or double glazing, as the material costs are lower. The average price range for installation in a double-glazed window with a wooden frame is 700.- to 900.- (excluding cat gate).
Buildigo Tip multiple glazing
Not sure whether your windows have double or triple glazing? Light the window with the flashlight of your smartphone. If you see the flashlight twice, you have double glazing. If the reflection is triple, you have well-insulating triple glazing.
Installation in a wall – seldom seen and very different costs
Installation in a wall is rather rare. The reason for this is probably that dismantling can hardly be carried out without visible differences to the rest of the masonry. The costs are heavily dependent on the nature of the wall. If it is a concrete wall, expensive core drilling is necessary. If it is a normal brick wall, the intervention is less time-consuming. It is best to install it on a wooden wall. If you are interested in this variant, we recommend that you arrange a visit with one of our carpenters or bricklayers.
